"...Paris is nostalgia, New York is
energy. I find an « in-your-face » character in New York, which many would
better avoid. This is true in the personal direct relationship, in the media
debates, but also in the city design and architecture. The bridges in New York
strike me as being bridges, not pretending to be pieces of art working as
bridges. This « form-follows-function » choice, probably, began with the
Brooklyn Bridge. True enough, the Chrysler Building or Philip Johnson ATT’s
skyscrapers tried to look as art. But , these Art deco and post- modern trends are globally
submersed in the « function-first” imperialism. This is true in life as well :
in Paris, you are what you are, in New York you are what you do..."
